The fundamental aspect of video is not the image, even though you can stand in amazement at what can be done electronically, how images can be manipulated and the really extraordinary creative possibilities. For me the essential basis of video is the movement - something that exists at the moment and changes in the next moment. -Bill Viola
Final Project Brief
Create a short film that plays close attention to the concept of “Structure.” The Final should demonstrate sensitivity to and appreciation for the technical and artistic merit of the moving image. Students can work in animation, video, or a hybrid of the two to create an original work that showcases their knowledge of the field. Students are free to create any kind of moving image work, about any subject matter that adheres to the structures we’ve outlined in class: Chronology, Mapping, Audio-driven, and Musical Structures are all acceptable.
I threaded the locations with the clue of music in city with a mix of reality and animation. I was inspired by Shannon Mattern’s Media Archaeology and his mentioning of the different functionalities of architecture in city. I tried to bridges the old church and pop culture to blend the past and present.
Here are some of the interesting moment in the process of this course.
This class allowed me to appreciate the charm of montage, and the variety of experimentation allowed me to find my own point of interest. I was surprised to find that the combination of some meaningless shots could produce new meanings; the difference of editing techniques, tones, and rhythms could bring a completely different visual experience to the audience.
